Book When I Last Saw You Review :

This is a fascinating story of a family with 9 children. The story begins in 1968 in Georga, when Margaret, also known as Maggie, has lost her husband Albert of many years. Albert's law partner asks who she wants to choose as a benficary since she is now the sole owner of Albert's estate. They never had any children, although because Albert was a very successful attorney they could have just about anything money could buy. What Margaret wanted most was a family. She has absolutely nobody now.The next part of the story goes back and it is 1901, in Coal Creek, West Virginia, where we meet Eliza, the loving, hard-working kind mother, of 9 children. Eliza's husband comes around only occasionaly, living in another town because he claimed that's where work was. It was also where he had a few girlfriends. He fathered 9 children, but he wasn't anything close to what a father was to any of the children and barely supported them financially.Back to 1968, Margaret is cleaning out Albert's desk, when she finds an invoice for a private investigator dated many years earlier. Since she's curious about what Albert needed a private investigator for she tracks him down. Thomas Batemas was retired, but agrees to see her and tells her Albert hired him to find her siblings. They'd all been separated and Margaret wanted to find the reason why. By now fifty years had gone by since Margaret has seen her brothers and sisters and after much prodding, Tom agreed to reopen the case.Tom sets off in his car, following the information he has. Soon Maggie, flies to the city he's in and together they drive across the country following clues as they look for answers about what happened to the 8 other siblings. This is an intriguing story, sometimes heartwrenching and other times it will warm your heart, as Maggie and Tom set off to find the truth of what actually happned all those years ago when each child went a separate way. This book is likely to grab at your heart from the very beginning as you travel along with Tom and Maggie searching for a family that was lost to one another.
Margaret, late sixties, is recently widowed. When going through her husband's files, she finds a receipt from a private detective. She calls him and finds out that he did some work for her late husband, years ago, trying to uncover the truth of Margaret's childhood. Margaret hires Tom to get back on the case, because she wants to know the truth, finally. Why did her large family break up? Why did their mother send the children away?Although Tom is retired, he's intrigued. After a bitter divorce, he doesn't have that much going on in his life, so agrees to investigate, spending many hours talking with Margaret about her family, trying to get leads. He sets out on the road, but after his initial foray, asks her to fly in and join him. She agrees, and they begin their search together. As they drive around the South, investigating (it's 1968, so there's no Google), they grow close. As they return to Margaret's roots, another story begins to unfold in parallel: that of Eliza, Margaret's mother, and the early years of the family, before all the children were sent to live away from their mother. Dirt poor, living in a shack in West Virginia coal country, Eliza is a married to the brutal, selfish Martin. He gets a job in town, leaving her to raise their ever-growing brood in desperate poverty while he lives well and has other women to entertain him. Eliza is a good woman, and the children are loved. Martin visits occasionally, keeping Eliza pregnant and the children frightened. In the present day, as Margaret travels with Tom and begins to learn what happened to her family, she is also learning about herself, coming to understand the cost of the life-changing concessions she made to her late husband. Will she finally, now, prioritize herself and seize happiness? Is it too late? When I Last Saw You is a beautiful story, richly detailed, with characters who stayed with me after I finished the book. Highly recommended.
